Liverpool need to invest heavily in the summer window to freshen up the squad, and FSG should back Arne Slot, who is likely to win the Premier League title in his first season at the club.
With Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contracts expiring, Liverpool need to strengthen their defence and forward line in the summer window.
It is not an ideal situation to lose three of their best players, but their exit looks inevitable with every passing day.
After Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup, Van Dijk suggested that he would be able to provide a definite update on his future by the end of the season.
He said: “Before the end of the season there’s going to be news. As long as I’m full committed and have my full focus on the task ahead, and I love the club, that’s the main thing. That’s who I am.”
Irrespective of whether Van Dijk stays or leaves, Liverpool still need to sign at least one quality centre-back in the summer. The Reds need to sign his long-term replacement at some point, considering his age.
Joe Gomez has struggled with fitness, and he is most likely to be sold. Ibrahima Konate is flirting with his future amid interest from Real Madrid, among other clubs, but Liverpool should be able to convince him to stay put.
Richard Hughes should do everything to sign AFC Bournemouth’s highly-rated defender, Dean Huijsen, in the summer window.
According to a recent report from Inews, the 19-year-old centre-back is seen as a natural replacement for Van Dijk. He has a £50 million release clause in his contract, and the Reds are willing to meet the amount.
Huijsen joined Bournemouth from Juventus for £12.6 million in July and has made 23 appearances in the Premier League this season.
Hughes played a big role in lining up a deal for Huijsen when he was at Bournemouth, and he knows the player very well. He is a right-footer who can play left-centre-back and can fill Van Dijk’s role.
Huijsen manages 1.8 interceptions and 5.5 clearances per game, and most importantly, he will only get better with age.
Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United are also keen to sign him, but Liverpool can tempt him with Champions League football, which he may find very hard to put down.
Hughes should play the biggest role here. He did an amazing job at Bournemouth as their sporting director and has great contacts within the club.
Liverpool should ideally look to get him at a reasonable price, but if Bournemouth refuses to sell unless the release clause is met, the Reds should submit the £50m cheque to get the deal done ahead of other rivals.
