The powers that be at La Liga giants Real Madrid are giving real consideration to putting to one side a long-standing contract stance, to move forward the renewal of a key member of the club’s backline.

That’s according to Marca, who point towards Antonio Rüdiger as the player in question.

Defender Rüdiger has for his part long established himself as one of the first names on the team sheet of Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti.

The German international, in fact, was the 2nd most used player in Los Blancos’ squad in the year of 2024, behind only Federico Valverde.

Amid an injury crisis at the heart of the Spanish champions’ backline, Rüdiger, in truth, at times almost single-handedly held things together for Real.

In turn, it should come as little surprise to learn that Florentino Pérez and co. are keen to keep hold of the club’s defensive stalwart for some time yet.

So much so that Los Merengues are giving real consideration to altering a long-time contract extension rule.

Ahead of the expiration of Rüdiger’s current terms in the summer of 2026, as per Marca:

‘Madrid’s policy in this regard is usually clear and involves extending the contract when the last year of the contract is reached, but it is not ruled out that in this case an extension will be made this summer until 2027 or 2028.
