With both semi-finals now completed, it has been confirmed that AC Milan will face Bologna in the final of the Coppa Italia in May.

With Milan getting past city rivals Inter and Bologna cruising past Empoli, the meeting for the showpiece game in the capital has been confirmed: it will be the Rossoneri against the Rossoblu.

Paths to the final

Milan made it through to the final of the Coppa Italia in potentially the best way possible, beating their rivals Inter 3-0 on Wednesday night. It was a ruthless second leg display – powered by Luka Jovic and Tijjani Reijnders – to secure a 4-1 aggregate win.

Prior to that, the Diavolo had beaten Sassuolo 6-1 in the last 16 phase under Paulo Fonseca, and then they emerged 3-1 winners against Roma in the quarter-finals, a game which Tammy Abraham, Joao Felix and Santiago Gimenez lit up San Siro.

Bologna will face Milan in their first Coppa Italia final for 51 years, after a 2-1 second leg win over Empoli last night meant a 5-1 aggregate triumph in the semi-final. Giovanni Fabiana and Thijs Dallinga scored at the Stadio Renato dall’Ara, either side of Viktor Kovalenko’s equaliser.

In the round of 16, Vincenzo Italiano’s side romped past Serie A’s bottom-placed side Monza, winning 4-0 at home, then they won 1-0 away from home against Atalanta in the quarter-finals to set up the semi-final meeting with the Tuscans.

Date, time and venue

Milan and Bologna will contest the Coppa Italia final on May 14 at 21:00 CEST, at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. It’s been seven years since the Rossoneri reached the final of the competition, and 22 years since they won it.

It is still not quite as long a drought as their opponents, though their head coach Italiano has now reached a final in each of the last four seasons (including his time at Fiorentina). He is yet to win one, however.

On the last two occasions Milan were beaten by their rivals Juventus, though this time there is no possibility of playing the Bianconeri given they were knocked out by Empoli in the quarter-final, who then lost to Bologna.

A possible fixture change

Before the Coppa Italia final, Milan will be involved in three league matches against Venezia, Genoa and – funnily enough – Bologna.

This last match could be played on Friday May 9 at 20:45, so as to give an extra day of rest to both teams. This was reported this morning by La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews).
