We've done it! Our UEFA Youth League team saw off reigning champions Olympiacos 1-0 thanks to a stunning goal from Enrique Aguilar. Daniel Beichler's boys have therefore secured their spot in the final-four tournament in Nyon at the end of April.
It was the Greeks who had the first good moment, but Sillah missed after he was challenged by our defender John Mellberg. Our boys then dominated the play, and while both Enrique Aguilar (8') and Marc Striednig (9') had chances, it was the Swiss youngster who sent 425 spectators at the Red Bull Football Academy out of their seats. The ball fell to him on the edge of the area from a Sulzbacher free-kick, and Aguilar arrowed the ball into the top corner in a stunning strike (11')!
The Erythrolefki struggled to cope with the dynamic play of Daniel Beichler's boys. Murillo had a pair of chances that were hit too close to the goalkeeper after a Baidoo pass – while Mellberg missed a headed chance and Baidoo a solo chance as it therefore remained 1-0 at the break.
The history of the first-half repeated itself after the change of ends. The Greeks had the first opportunity of the period as Christian Zawieschitzky saved from Liatsikouras, and our boys went hunting for a second. Baidoo – from a corner – Moser and Baidoo again (both from distance) had chances to double our lead. We had to survive a nervy final few minutes until it was confirmed that our Young Bulls were quarter-final winners and therefore in the final four of the UEFA Youth League!
I am extremely proud! I said before the match that we have represented the club and the academy superbly with our performances. As a reward we are now going to Switzerland, where we will continue to play with hunger. It has always been a quality and strength of ours to take each step as it comes. Now we have the semi-finals, and we are looking forward to that!
