Chelsea tested the waters for Douglas Luiz during the recent talks centered around Juventus target Renato Veiga. The Bianconeri don’t outright exclude the departure of basically any of their players, but only on their own terms, La Gazzetta dello Sport relays.
The Blues asked for the midfielder on loan as they are dealing with some injury concerns in the role. The Old Lady rebuffed them, as they’d only let go of the Brazilian on a permanent deal, or at least with heavy reassurances about the fact he’d be bought out.
Douglas Luiz continues to have some fans in the Premier League despite his pedestrian first six months at Juventus. Manchester City reportedly touched base for him as well in recent weeks. He came in from Aston Villa with a €50M valuation in a partial swap. Therefore, the Old Lady needs a hefty sum to avoid a loss, and an offer of that caliber isn’t on the horizon for the time being.
At this stage, the Bianconeri are closer to Lloyd Kelly than to Veiga as Newcastle United posed more favorable conditions. He could leave on loan with a simple option, and not an obligation to buy. On the other hand, the two aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive.
Stranger things have happened, but it’ll take a stroke of luck for them to recoup the investment, and it’ll be a lot easier in the future as the amortization kicks in. Even though he’s not a regular and hasn’t found his exact role yet, he’s starting to show some signs of life as of late. Sometimes the right solution is just to ride things out.
