“Our plan was for the game to pan out in much the way it did. We were on top in the 15-20 minutes after the break and that was the decisive period of the game,” said Hoeneß.
“We shouldn't have conceded the goal, but we're delighted to have won here - it's not something you can take for granted. My young team deserve a huge amount of credit.”
After taking a commanding 2-0 lead, Borussia Dortmund dragged themselves back into the game with ten minutes of normal time remaining via Julian Bradnt.
Hoeneß took the time post-match to praise summer arrival Jeff Chabot, who put in a colossal performance at the heart of Stuttgart's defence, alongside scoring his side's second goal.
“Jeff Chabot was an absolute rock today. He's a good guy, and he was uncomfortable with all the praise he got today. That just goes to show the kind of person he is.”
The defender netted not just his first Stuttgart goal today but also his first in German football after also spending time at FC Köln at professional level before his summer move to Stuttgart.
“It's incredible to win in Dortmund,” said Chabot.
“We played against a good team. We implemented our own game out on the pitch, didn't shy away from any tackles and were aggressive. IT was an important win today, but we've still got a lot of games left to play.”
“I'm really happy to have scored my first Bundesliga goal, especially at such a stadium and in a game like this. I hope this means the dam is broken for me now.”
Also speaking after the match was striker Deniz Undav.
“We know how tough it is to win here in Dortmund. We defended brilliantly and made the most of our chances. Things got a bit tense towards the end, but we won. I'm happy that Jeff got his goal, having previously had two disallowed for offside. We actually had a celebration planned together, but he must have forgotten about it in the heat of the moment.”
The win for Stuttgart stretches their run against Dortmund to four wins out of the last four in the league. And whilst todays showing was not quite the scintillating 5-1 showing on home soil back in September, it was a performance to show that Die Schwaben are there to stay in regards to the race for Champions League football.
