Hull City are once again in the new manager market after the controversial decision to part ways with Ruben Selles, with reports of as many as five managers being interviewed for the position.

Despite keeping the Tigers in the Championship on the last day, Selles was dismissed after only being in charge for just over six months - having arrived in December 2024.

This marks the third managerial departure at the MKM Stadium within the last year, following Tim Walter and Liam Rosenior. Owner Acun Ilicali certainly has ambitions but is arguably impatient when it comes to a dream of Premier League promotion.

Multiple names have now emerged as potential successors, with Ilicali wanting proven EFL experience and up to five are set to battle it out, according to Hull Daily Mail.

Reason behind Ruben Selles' dismissal

Selles saved Hull from relegation on the final day of the Championship season on goal difference but found himself jobless not soon after.

In a club statement, Hull explained their decision: "Following a thorough review of football operations after a challenging campaign, the club feels a change in leadership is necessary to move the team forward in line with our ambitions."

On the face of it, the sacking did seem harsh, with Selles inheriting a team in turmoil following Tim Walter's dismal performance in charge. In fact, Hull's points total during Selles reign would have placed them in 12th place, good given the circumstances.

Ilicali demonstrated his ruthless approach to management once more, having previously sacked Liam Rosenior for not getting the play-offs in 2023/24. The Turkish Simon Cowell has been somewhat trigger-happy in an attempt to get to the first-tier.

Miron Muslic the favoured candidate for Hull City, Erol Bulut in mind

According to Darren Witcoop on X, Miron Muslic is the preferred option for the managerial role at Hull and former Cardiff man Erol Bulut is also believed to be in the mind of fellow Turk Ilicali.

Unlike Selles, Muslic was relegated this season with Plymouth Argyle. Although it isn't really fair to blame the Austrian-Bosnian, who took over from Wayne Rooney, and he earned his fair share of plaudits with three wins in the last five, showing what sort of belief he brought to Home Park.

Ilicali wants managers with EFL experience

After experiments with Shota Arveladze and Tim Walter, who both had little knowledge of English football, Ilicali has appeared to have shifted his strategy towards those with EFL experience.

In the Hull Daily Mail, names 'likely" to be considered include Dean Smith, Muslic, Alex Neil, and Ryan Mason - Mason being the only one on the list without EFL managerial experience, but he did play for the Tigers.

Time is of the essence for Hull as they look to make their sixth permanent managerial appointment since Ilicali took ownership of the club in 2022. With little time until the transfer window is opened for a short-time, securing the right man quickly will be vital.
