Liverpool extended their lead in the Premier League title race to 11 points after beating Manchester City 2-0 on Sunday.

This was a clash that felt like a changing of the guard. Liverpool headed into the clash against the struggling champions as favourites, but with history against them having failed to win a league fixture at the Etihad since November 2015.

City started positively as Pep Guardiola’s side looked to throw a spanner in the works of the team aiming to replace them as champions. Jeremy Doku was a menacing threat up against Trent Alexander-Arnold, successfully dribbling past the Reds right-back three times in the opening five minutes alone.

It was Liverpool, however, who found an early breakthrough and it arrived from a familiar source. A well-worked corner kick routine saw Dominik Szoboszlai steer Alexis Mac Allister’s low delivery back towards the penalty spot, where Mohamed Salah was on hand to slam home. It was the Egyptian’s sixth straight league game with a goal and 25th of an incredible campaign.

Liverpool doubled their advantage on 37 minutes. Alexander-Arnold’s fine pass released Salah down the right, before the 32-year-old paused to pick out Szoboszlai’s run. The Hungarian drilled in a low finish through traffic as the visitors took control of the contest.

Curtis Jones had the ball in the net after the break but saw his effort disallowed for a marginal offside in the build-up, as Liverpool looked to make the result safe. In truth, despite City huffing and puffing, the Merseysiders rarely looked like giving up their lead.

In the final stages, the travelling fans bellowed out a chorus of “We’re going to win the league.”

Few inside Anfield will be getting carried away, but Arsenal’s slip on Saturday and a statement win at City has widened the gap to the chasing pack.

Liverpool look almost impossible to stop here.
