The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has released detailed VAR audio and analysis explaining the decision to disallow Corinthians’ second goal in their 1-0 win over Santos, a moment that drew intense debate among fans and pundits in the aftermath of the São Paulo derby.

The incident occurred when Félix Torres won possession deep in Corinthians’ half, bringing down Deivid Washington before launching a quick counter-attack. Yuri Alberto raced through to beat Santos’ defense and finished past Gabriel Brazão, seemingly doubling the hosts' advantage. However, referee Raphael Claus, after consulting with video assistants, chalked off the goal for a foul in the build-up.

CBF’s published VAR tapes clarify the decision. Video officials identified two infractions during Torres’ challenge: “a touch from underneath and a push on the back that removed the white-shirted player from the play.” That dual contact, according to the VAR, was sufficient to interfere with Deivid Washington’s attempt to maintain possession for Santos and warranted the foul.

Claus, called to review the footage at the sideline monitor, spent little time confirming the recommendation. During the exchange, he said, “Give me a lateral view. I’ll disallow the goal and restart with a foul for Santos.” The final decision reversed what would have been Alberto’s second score, maintaining the narrow margin that eventually held up as the final result.

This wasn’t the only close VAR involvement in the match. Corinthian striker Yuri Alberto’s earlier goal was itself subject to video review, as some questioned whether the ball had fully crossed the line before keeper Gabriel Brazão’s save. The VAR team quickly confirmed the ball had indeed gone over, validating a goal that proved decisive for the home side.

The clarity from CBF arrives amid wider scrutiny of VAR’s impact on Brazilian football, particularly in high-stakes matches like the Clássico Alvinegro. On the night, the technology intervened twice: first to confirm a legitimate winner and then to rule out a would-be insurance goal for Corinthians. That balance of precision and frustration has become familiar for supporters on both sides.

For Corinthians, the explanation offers closure after a tense encounter marked by midfield control and narrow margins. For Santos, the decision represents another chapter of missed opportunities in a demanding campaign.
