Bruno Fernandes will join up with the Portugal national squad in his best form of the season, after another highly productive performance in Manchester United’s 3-0 win at Leicester City on Sunday.

Fernandes registered another two assists, before crowning the victory with a stunning finish. The United skipper now has a remarkable 10 goal involvements in his last seven matches for the Red Devils in all competitions, leading manager Ruben Amorim to declare he will not be rotated anytime soon.

United have enjoyed a positive week following the disappointment of their recent FA Cup exit to Marco Silva’s Fulham. A home draw (1-1) with Arsenal was followed by a 4-1 hammering of Real Sociedad to secure progression to the Europa League quarter-finals, while Sunday’s cruise against Leicester sees the Red Devils head into the international break in good spirits.

Fernandes had come into the match off the back of widespread praise, having scored a stunning free-kick against Arsenal and hitting a hat-trick to see his side past Sociedad. Fernandes set up much-needed goals for Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho in the first half against Leicester, before Diogo Dalot’s skilful approach play saw him beat his man and pick out Fernandes, who finished superbly from the edge of the area.

“Bruno has surprised me” - Amorim

Asked if he could consider the possibility of resting Bruno, Amorim replied: “I don’t feel that with Bruno, he’s a special guy in that aspect, he’s always ready. He can recover quite well, so I don’t know the future, but I always see a Bruno that is dangerous. A Bruno that can recover in every situation, so he’s going to stay there.

“Does it surprise me? No, I already knew Bruno. What surprised me the most is the way he works every day. Even we in Portugal see Bruno with that [body language] frustration and I was really surprised. He’s a very good professional. And you can understand that frustration – he wants to win. And that is a good thing.

“I think the [team’s] performances are improving, then when you have the performance and the result you feel better. I’m seeing different things in the team. Today there was a lack of energy, but the team is finding a way to win games when tired and it’s a good sign.”

Amorim’s side will meet Paulo Fonseca’s Lyon in the Europa League last-eight next month, in what will be an intriguing battle between two of Portugal’s most talented coaches.
