The Gunners had plenty of chances to win the game before losing on penalties, especially as United defender Diogo Dalot was sent off shortly after the hour mark.

Bruno Fernandes had put the visitors ahead before then, but Gabriel got Arsenal back on level terms minutes after Dalot was dismissed.

Mikel Arteta’s side, however, could not find a winning goal, with Martin Odegaard missing a penalty, and they were eventually beaten 5-3 on spot-kicks as they crashed out of the FA Cup.

Simon Collings was at Emirates Stadium to see Arsenal in action...

David Raya 6

Beaten by a great finish by Fernandes. Had very little to do, however he made a great stop to keep out Joshua Zirkzee in extra-time. Did not get near any of the penalties.

Jurrien Timber 6

Had some nice link-up play in the first-half when Jesus was on the right wing. Another solid performance. Appeared to go off holding his hamstring.

William Saliba 6

Kept Rasmus Hojlund quiet and forced the United striker to feed off very little. Little to no defending to do after United went down to 10 men.

Gabriel 7

Slipped and allowed Alejandro Garnacho to drive forward and setup Fernandes’ goal. Made amends by scoring to get Arsenal back level.

Myles Lewis-Skelly 6

Kept his place in the team with Riccardo Calafiori out due to injury. Almost caught out on the ball a few times, but largely solid.

Martin Odegaard 6

Better than he has been in recent weeks and involved in many of Arsenal’s best attacking moments, but missed a penalty when the game was tied at 1-1. Showed courage to score Arsenal’s first penalty in the shootout.

Jorginho 6

A surprise starter over Declan Rice and Thomas Partey. A steady performance. Created two good chances for Rice with some lovely passes on the edge of the box.

Mikel Merino 5

Continues to struggle in this team and yet to get up to speed. Plenty of work off the ball, but not making an impact on it.

Gabriel Jesus 6

The fourth player to start on the right wing since Bukayo Saka’s injury. Was playing well but carried off on a stretcher after 40 minutes. A huge blow for Arsenal.

Kai Havertz 3

A nightmare game for the German. Missed two huge chances in the second-half and then had his penalty saved in the shootout, too.

Gabriel Martinelli 5

Involved in Arsenal’s equaliser as it was his cross that Gabriel eventually fired home. Scored in the first-half, but it was ruled out for offside.

Substitutions

Raheem Sterling (Jesus 40’) 6

On for his appearance since December 18 after being out with a knee injury. Looked sharp and gave Arsenal a threat down the right. Could start against Tottenham on Wednesday.

Declan Rice (Merino 73’) 7

Nearly scored minutes after coming on, but denied by a top save. Looked far more dangerous than Merino.

Leandro Trossard (Lewis-Skelly 90’) 5

Thrown on as Arteta took off a left-back and pushed for the win.

Thomas Partey (Timber 100’) 6

On at right-back as Timber appeared to be struggling with a hamstring issue.

Kieran Tierney (Jorginho 113’) N/A

Subs not used: Neto, Kiwior, Zinchenko, Butler-Oyedeji
