Sky Germany reports that Borussia Dortmund wants to make Nico Schlotterbeck the future face of the club and will look to extend his contract.
In recent weeks, Schlotterbeck has been linked with a move away from the Signal Iduna Park if Dortmund fails to qualify for the Champions League. Although a transfer away in the summer cannot be ruled out, the 25-year-old is open to staying at Dortmund, even if they do not reach Europe.
Contract talks are currently on hold due to Dortmund’s poor sporting situation, they are currently 11th in the Bundesliga, but when talks resume, Die Schwarzgelben will aim to double his salary which is currently at €5-6m.
Despite Dortmund’s poor form, Schlotterbeck has been one of the only consistent performers in the squad this season and has also been a regular in the squad.
At the weekend, things got worse for BVB as they lost 2-0 to RB Leipzig, however, just like last season, Dortmund are performing in the Champions League. They came back from 1-0 down in the second leg against Lille last week to win 2-1 and earn a place in the quarter-finals against Barcelona.
