Carlo Ancelotti hit out at his Real Madrid players' execution of his game plan after they were thumped by Barcelona in the Super Cup final on Sunday.

Despite entering the game in significantly better form than their opponents, Madrid were utterly embarrased as Barcelona ran out 5-2 winners - a scoreline which likely would have been worse for Los Blancos had Barca not seen goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny sent off early in the second half, when they were already 5-1 ahead.

It was a bitterly disappointing performance from Madrid, and Ancelotti argued it was the complete opposite of what he had drawn up.

"We defended badly, this harmed us in the game, they found the goals easily and we did not defend well in high pressure or in the low block," he said.

"At half-time I said that first we had to try to play football because in the first half we did not play football, we hit long balls but that was not the idea, the idea was to play and we did not play. I told them that they can lose games but not in the way we played in the first half."

Luka Modric, the only Madrid player to speak to the media after the game, refused to criticise Ancelotti's approach to the match.

"We have to work now and correct our mistakes," the midfielder said. "We didn't play a good game, Barca were better and that's it."

Modric continued: "It's not nice when your biggest rival scores nine goals in two games. I think we will react, I'm sure. We didn't think we would have a game like this and we feel sorry for the fans and for ourselves. Now is the time to stay united and work hard, I'm sure we will bring a lot of joy throughout the season, there is still a long way to go.

"If we have to lose a final... it's better that it's this one. This is football and in football there are victories and defeats. We lost this time. It's never nice to lose, but if we have to choose a defeat, it's better in the Super Cup. We have to congratulate Barcelona, ​​because they were better and that's it."
