Eddie Howe’s time at Newcastle United could be limited, even if he leads the club to Carabao Cup glory this weekend. According to talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan, Howe is not seen as the long-term solution for the Magpies, despite his impressive work since taking charge in November 2021.

Howe has turned Newcastle into a competitive force in the Premier League and helped them to return into the Champions League. Jordan, on the other hand, thinks the Saudi-backed ownership has higher aspirations, including Champions League and Premier League, which would call for managerial change.

A 'Gatekeeper' - not a Long-Term Solution

Jordan described Howe as a “gatekeeper,” a term he has used before to describe managers who stabilize a club before a bigger name takes over, The Mirror reports.

""I’ve always said, and I don’t make any apologies for this, I said this to him when I spoke to him, is that I’ve always felt [Howe] is the gatekeeper. Ultimately, it’s very unlikely that the lofty ambitions of the Saudis, who didn’t buy Newcastle so they can win the League Cup, they want to win the Premier League and Champions League.""Simon Jordan

While a Carabao Cup victory would be celebrated by fans, Jordan suggested that financial constraints and the club’s long-term goals could lead to Howe’s departure within 18 months.

Despite the speculation, Howe has the chance to etch his name into Newcastle’s history by ending their 68-year wait for a major domestic trophy. The Magpies face Liverpool at Wembley on Sunday - a win would be a monumental achievement for the club and its supporters.

Howe has acknowledged the significance of the occasion, saying, “It’s a long time [since the club won a trophy]. We’d love to end it and we’ll work as hard as we can to try to do that.”

While Jordan’s comments cast doubt on Howe’s future, the Newcastle boss remains focused on the task at hand. A victory over Liverpool could buy him more time, but the pressure to deliver silverware and meet the owners’ ambitious targets will only intensify.
