Dom Ballard has left Southampton to join Cambridge United on a loan deal until the end of this season. It is his second loan this season.
Southampton have used the January transfer window well. While there might be some fans out there who are underwhelmed with the incomings this month, the Saints have made some difficult calls, which was necessary.
Among those calls, the decision to bring back players from their loan deals early to settle their futures more efficiently was certainly included. Another Southampton player has followed that same trajectory.
At the beginning of the month, Southampton made the call to return Dom Ballard from his loan spell at Blackpool. The forward didn't get much of a look-in at Blackpool and his confidence levels seemingly dropped due to his inability to return goals.
Therefore, the Saints made the difficult but necessary decision to bring Ballard back to St Marys Stadium. Since he has been back, Ballard has benefitted from minutes with the youth setup, showcasing his ability to return goals with an impressive four goals across two matches.
According to a report from Alfie House of The Daily Echo, Dom Ballard has now secured his second loan move of the season. He will join up with Cambridge United until the end of the campaign.
In total, Ballard has now been involved in three loans. All three loan deals occurred in the third tier of English football and now, Ballard will hope to develop well enough to be considered for the Saints next season.
Let's not forget (not that we can) that Southampton are likely to return to the Championship next season. Therefore, they might rely on players such as Ballard to come back full of confidence and ready to prove a point. He clearly has a bright future ahead of him, after all.
