Inter Milan’s derby hero Stefan de Vrij is happy with a draw against AC Milan in Serie A this evening given the circumstances.
The Dutchman spoke to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews, after the 1-1 draw. He admitted that “if you’re behind in the ninetieth minute, a draw is great.”
For a long time, it looked like Inter were heading for their third straight derby defeat this season.
Having gone behind to Milan just before halftime, the second half of this evening’s match was always going to be tough.
The Rossoneri did very well defensively. Both individually and as a unit, they were able to frustrate Inter, getting bodies in the way of everything.
Moreover, Inter Milan managed to hit the post on three separate occasions.
There were crosses into the box, innumerable corner kicks, but the telling chance just wasn’t coming for Inter.
The chance wasn’t coming, that is, until the dying embers of the match.
Inter kept pushing, putting the ball into the box in the hope that they could finally unlock the Milan defense.

And that is what finally happened.
Nerazzurri debutant Nicola Zalewski ran onto the ball, and then played it across the face of goal. No Milan player was able to get to it, but Inter defender Stefan de Vrij was.
The Dutchman turned the ball in with a cheeky finish. This salvaged a point for Inter, and sent the whole Nerazzurri team into rapture.
After the match, defender de Vrij commented that “We always want to win.”
“Even today, we played our game,” he continued. “But then they found the opening goal on the counter.”
“But then, if you’re losing in the ninetieth minute, it’s great if you can get a draw.”
