While a host of pundits have been urging Ruben Amorim to drop his tactical formation, only INEOS can prompt the Manchester United boss to make such a drastic change.

Over the past couple of years, the falling Premier League giants have been spending cash in abundance on the transfer market with the aim of presenting Erik ten Hag with a squad capable of thriving in a 4-2-3-1 system.

While these efforts proved futile in the end with the Dutchman dismissed in October, the current squad is equally struggling to interpret Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system.

Therefore, many pundits have already invited the Portuguese manager to cast this formation aside, at least temporarily, since he doesn’t have the right weapons at his disposal. Nevertheless, this popular advice fell on deaf ears, with the Man Utd boss refusing to implement any noticeable changes despite the worrying results.

Arsenal legend Paul Merson went on to describe the 40-year-old’s stubbornness as ‘insanity’.

“I honestly don’t know what Amorim is trying to do. It’s insanity because it’s not working at all. Manchester United have been all over the place under him and need to come back to a 4-3-3 and try to become solid.”

But as Manchester Evening News journalist Steven Railston explains, INEOS are the only ones capable of implementing a change in this regard, albeit in an indirect fashion.

The source doesn’t expect the club’s managing co-owners to explicitly demand a tactical overhaul. However, their stance would play a major role on this front.

As Railston puts it, Amorim could sense some urgency if INEOS were to ask him to salvage the campaign, suggesting his future could well depend on the club’s results between now and the end of the season. In this case, he could opt for a more pragmatic approach.

On the contrary, if the owners are willing to completely drop the ball on the current campaign, the young tactician would be happy to continue his experiment until the end of the season.
