Lazio sporting director Angelo Fabiani provided a lukewarm answer when interrogated on Marco Baroni and his future at the club.
Following the shocking 0-5 defeat in Bologna, several reports in the Italian media (including one from Il Corriere dello Sport) claimed that the manager’s position at the club is no longer as solid as it was following the fabulous first half of the season. So while the management was tempted to offer the Tuscan a new deal, this plan has been put on hold.
In his recent statements, Fabiani has all but confirmed this situation with his coy answers, offering little reassurance on the head coach’s future. In his interview with Il Messaggero (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), the sporting director admitted that Baroni, like everyone else at the club, remains under evaluation between now and the end of the season.
No, today, Baroni’s future is not up for discussion, but I am like the designer of a car. I wait for the end of the race to see if there is a piece that is not right. This issue concerns everyone, not just the manager. There won’t be a confrontation, but a daily dialogue. Baroni will analyze firsthand what went wrong and we will do a deep reflection together so we can end the Serie A and Europa League campaigns in the best way possible.
Fabiani also revealed Adam Marusic has an automatic renewal clause in his contract which will be activated, while the futures of Pedro and Matias Vecino (both running on expiring deals) will be discussed later.
We adjusted the contract of [Christos] Mandas because it was the right do and we had promised to do so. Adam already has another automatic year, the others will be disucced in due time, which isn’t now. There are no alarm bells at Lazio, either on or off the pitch.
