With 15 Bundesliga goals to his name this season, Jonathan Burkardt has played a key role in what has been a sensational campaign for Mainz so far. Therefore, it's only natural that he's being linked with other clubs.

Currently in third place in the Bundesliga, Mainz are on course to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in the club's history.

Such an achievement would naturally increase the chances of Burkardt staying at the club, according to sporting director Niko Bungert.

“In Johnny's case, he would certainly enjoy playing at European level with his club - I can say that for sure. He knows it will help him progress. And, of course, Champions League qualification would help us keep players on board and bring them on board as well. Europa League qualification would certainly do the same,” Burkardt told Sky Germany.

With Burkardt's contract running until 2027, Mainz are under no pressure to sell their star striker.

"We will be in dialogue with Johnny and he will keep us updated on how he sees his future and what he wants. But at the moment he feels very comfortable and if there is another scenario at some point, we'll talk about it."
