Rodri’s Return Offers Man City Fresh Hope in Title Race

Guardiola Provides Encouraging Update on Midfield Star

Manchester City’s midfield metronome Rodri could make a long-awaited return before the season concludes, according to manager Pep Guardiola.

City fans were given a glimpse of optimism on Friday when the club released footage of the Spaniard training, marking the first time he has been seen on the pitch since suffering a serious knee injury against Arsenal in September. While club officials have been cautious about placing a definitive timeline on his return, Guardiola has now hinted at the possibility of Rodri featuring before the campaign ends.

City’s Struggles Without Rodri

There is no question that City have felt Rodri’s absence. The reigning champions, so often dominant in midfield with him at the base, have struggled to control games in the same way. Currently sitting fourth in the Premier League, 20 points behind leaders Liverpool after suffering eight league defeats, their title defence has been far from straightforward.

Given his influence, the sight of Rodri back in training has naturally sparked excitement among supporters. Guardiola acknowledged that sentiment but urged caution.

“The fans must know they are not the only ones who are excited,” said the City boss. “It’s been five months or six months. But [it’s] one step at a time. We don’t have to make stupid decisions [for him] to come weeks earlier. He’s not close to coming back, but he’s touching the ball and is in the locker room. He feels confident and happy.”

Rodri’s Potential Role Before the Season Ends

Initially, Guardiola had dismissed any hope of Rodri returning in time to play a role in City’s run-in. However, the latest developments appear to have softened that stance, with the manager now suggesting that the 28-year-old could even feature in the FIFA Club World Cup in June.

“I could not expect before [him to return] before the end of the season, not even for the [Club] World Cup, but maybe it’s going to happen,” Guardiola admitted.

For City, having Rodri back would provide a huge boost in both domestic and European competitions, as well as their upcoming bid for world honours.

Defensive Injury Concerns Mount for City

While Rodri’s progress is a positive, City’s defensive situation remains a concern. Guardiola confirmed that Nathan Aké is set for further tests after another setback.

“He struggles sometimes with the feet,” Guardiola explained. “It’s been like this the whole season with the central defenders.”

Aké, who has already missed large chunks of the season, was withdrawn at half-time against Plymouth, while fellow defenders John Stones and Manuel Akanji also remain sidelined.

As City prepare for a crucial few months, their injury fortunes could define the remainder of their season—both in midfield and at the back.
