Speaking after VfB Stuttgart’s 4-3 loss to Bayer Leverkusen (via kicker), Stuttgart head coach Sebastian Hoeneß commented on the manner his team played.

In the game on Sunday evening, Stuttgart were the better side for around 55 minutes, and Hoeneß had praise for how his team played:

“We played passionately, courageously, and dynamically in possession,”

However, Stuttgart threw away their two-goal lead. First Piero Hincapié scored to make it 3-2 then a deflected Victor Boniface shot made it 3-3 and then right at the death, Patrik Schick headed in a Jeremie Frimpong cross to make it 4-3. Hoeneß gave his thoughts on the game as a whole:

“It’s hard, it hurts, the outcome of the match is agonising…The deserved reward was that we managed to build a two-goal lead. The crucial factor in the final score is that we conceded too quickly after our goals. There’s no good wallowing in self-pity now; we have to get through this period together and do everything in our power to turn it around. If we manage that, it can bring us further as a team.”

VfB sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth also commented on the final two goals that were conceded:

“We defended the set pieces, but the ball was deflected two or three times in such a way that it landed at the opponent’s feet. There was a certain amount of bad luck involved, but that’s by no means an excuse.”

The loss against Leverkusen now means that Stuttgart are winless in four matches, and in a couple of these games a win was in their hands, but they threw the result away. Whilst they also find themselves in 10th in the Bundesliga. Luckily due to the nature of the European places this season, they are only five points off of sixth and are still in the DFB Pokal semi-finals.
