Following a 5-0 win over Valencia in the Copa del Rey quarter-final, FC Barcelona are set to face Sevilla in their upcoming La Liga match.
This game could end up having significant implications for the league title race as the other two main contenders for the title, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, are set to play against one another tonight, and at least one of them is certain to drop points.
However, currently standing 12th in the league, the Andalusians will also be fighting to improve their position on the table. Sevilla have had an underwhelming season, but they remain a tricky opponent, and this will not be an easy game for the Blaugranes.
Sevilla coach García Pimienta, who previously managed Barcelona Atlètic, will be particularly looking forward to this fixture due to his ties with the Catalan club.
Having developed several young talents during his time in charge of the youth team, Pimienta is well aware of Barcelona’s footballing philosophy and will look to exploit any weaknesses he perceives in their approach.
As MARCA has reported, the Spanish tactician spoke to the press ahead of the match. While he refrained from outright declaring Barcelona as the best team in Europe, he still acknowledged their recent form:
“I don’t know, they’ll have to prove it, but they’re in excellent form. Yesterday’s game, the previous ones… It’s true that they struggled a lot against Alavés. These are opponents that are better than you; they don’t need to have a great day, and you have to be spot-on in everything.”
The Sevilla coach also emphasized the importance of a disciplined and proactive approach against Barcelona:
“We must not make silly mistakes because their quality means they won’t forgive us. We need to be brave with the ball, know how to defend, be aware that we can win possession in certain areas and hurt them, and when we have the ball, make them suffer, make it an uncomfortable game for them.”
Pimienta also stressed the importance of mental resilience. He urged his players to remain composed even if Barcelona take the lead, highlighting how matches can change dramatically over 90 minutes:
“Stay in the game at all times, regardless of the score—even if they go ahead, stick to the same plan, because matches are long, and you can always have your chances.”
There is no doubt that Barcelona have unexpectedly suffered against some sides against whom they were the clear favorites. Pimienta will definitely be hoping that he can spring another upset in the upcoming game, but hopefully, the Catalans will be able to continue with their winning form and get a favorable result in La Liga.
