Ahead at the end of the first half thanks to Aleksandr Golovin, the Rouge et Blanc gave in after the break to two unlucky breaks and lost 2-1 at the Stade Vélodrome.

A terrible scenario… Despite Aleksandr Golovin’s opening goal at the end of the first half — his second goal in a row in the league, the Monegasques ended up giving in in the second half, finally losing 2-1 against Olympique de Marseille.

The context 📅

It was a real six-pointer that awaited AS Monaco away to Olympique de Marseille. With a three-point lead over their opponent this evening, the Rouge et Blanc had the opportunity to widen the gap on third place and get closer to PSG, who had been held to a draw yesterday. To do this, they would have to make it three in a row in the league after beating Strasbourg and Brest.

When we talk about away games, I think the one in Marseille is always the most special, because of the incredible atmosphere. It’s a very big game for us, especially since we’re coming off a defeat against Benfica and we want to bounce back. It will be difficult, against a very good team that has changed coaches and recruited a lot of quality players.

The XI 👥

For this big match of the 13th matchday, Adi Hütter made four changes compared to the match against Benfica. Thus, Christian Mawissa, Mohammed Salisu, Soungoutou Magassa and Folarin Balogun returned to the starting XI in the 4-2-3-1 selected by the Monegasque manager, with the American behind the trio of Akliouche-Ben Seghir-Golovin.

The scenario 🎞

The Rouge et Blanc started well and Folarin Balogun, found in behind by Maghnes Akliouche, beat Balerdi before picking out Eliesse Ben Seghir, who was denied by Rulli at the penalty spot (4′). After a pleasant start, the match became more choppy with several breaks, including through an injury to the linesman (16′).

An opening goal at the best time

This benefitted Marseille who put their foot on the ball and showed themselves to be dangerous through Maupay, whose shot deflected by Wilfried Singo fizzed over (19′), then through Greenwood, who saw his shot from 20 meters stopped by Radek’ (24′). But it was indeed the Monegasques who will open the score just before the break.

Found on the left side of the area by Denis Zakaria, Aleksandr Golovin tried his luck with his right foot. It was slightly deflected by Murillo as he beat his goalkeeper at the near post (41′). Already a scorer against Brest, the Russian midfielder therefore repeated the feat barely a week later.

An unlucky equalizer

Adi Hütter’s men were close to doubling the lead from the restart on a corner but Hojbjerg, with the tip of his foot, took the ball away from Wil’, when he only had to push the ball into the back of the net (50′). Unfortunately, shortly thereafter, Luis Henrique equalized from close range (53′).

This goal did not destabilize the Rouge et Blanc who started again and had an opportunity through their captain who lost his one-on-one against Rulli (60′). The match then came  alive and it was Greenwood’s turn to show himself but Majecki was able to stop him (64′).

A stroke of fate unfavorable to the Monegasques

The Monegasque coach then took advantage of the hour mark to bring on Embolo, Minamino and Ouattara. And the last two quickly made their mark. On a cross from the left back, the Japanese international was found in the area but only found the side netting (77′). But on a harmless chance, Mawissa touched the ball with his hand in the area, and it was converted by Greenwood (88′).

Now focused on Toulouse

It was a terrible end to the match… AS Monaco lost 2-1 at the Stade Vélodrome against Olympique de Marseille and dropped into third place behind their opponent of the evening, level on points. But there’s no time to dwell on it as another league match is scheduled for Saturday with a visit from Toulouse to the Stade Louis-II (5 p.m.).
