Former Roma midfielder Mady Camara spoke to GianlucaDiMarzio.com about his brief spell in the Italian capital.
Camara was brought in as a last minute addition in the summer of 2022 and only made 21 appearances all season long, returning to Olympiakos in 2023.
“The other night I watched the match against Milan. I still follow them and root for them: I talk to Pellegrini and Svilar, sometimes even with Mancini. Ours was a great team, it’s a shame about the defeat in the Europa League final against Sevilla. But I have fantastic memories.”
“The passion of the city has remained within me: the atmosphere in Serie A is magical.”
“Now I’m focused on Paok, but in the future who knows: I wouldn’t mind returning to Italy. It was a very positive year in Giallorossi and I was lucky enough to be coached by Mourinho.”
“Mourinho? I have a good relationship with him, I even wrote to him when he signed with Fenerbahce to wish him the best”
“In 2022 he called me unexpectedly. He had spoken to Pedro Martins, who was my coach at Olympiacos and Martins had only told him positive things about me.”
“Mou had been studying me for years: he was impressed by my performance in the Europa League in 2019 against his Tottenham. He won me over with one phrase: ‘If you come with me, you must always be the Mady I saw in that match.”
“He is a coach who gives a lot of confidence to the players and a lot of advice with his experience. Even when I was injured he continued to call me up with the team: he never left me behind. In fact, in the Europa League final I was on the bench. He told me he wanted me with the group because I deserved it and to bring smiles and positive energy: that Roma was a great group, I had fun. All the leaders welcomed me as if they were at home from day one.”
“Many Roma players impressed me. If I have to choose three for quality and talent, it’s a toss between Dybala, Pellegrini and… Volpato. Cristian was very young two years ago but had enormous quality: everyone at Roma felt he could become a great player, and I believe that if he continues to work well, over time he can become one.”
“The Europa League final against Sevilla was a special moment but at the same time a great disappointment. After the defeat we were disappointed. Mourinho told us to keep our heads up: ‘You did a great job. They didn’t give us a clear penalty, we deserved more. But if you continue to work like this, this team can reach great goals.”
