Former Celt Shay Given backs Ange Postecolgou to deliver for Tottenham

From one former Celt to another, Shay Given defended Ange Postecoglou on BBC’s Match of the Day 2 last night…

The Irishman was joined by presenter Mark Chapman and former Aston Villa and Germany midfielder, Thomas Hitzlsperger, to review the weekend’s results, including Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat at home to Leicester City.

Ange Postecoglou has been under pressure

Ange has been under pressure down south for some time now and many have called for his head after a miserable recent run, which has culminated in the devastating home loss to a relegation threatened team. Ruud Van Nistelrooy couldn’t have believed his luck when Ange’s side went from one in total control of the match, to one that conceded two goals in the space of minutes.

It’s been a familiar theme for Postecoglou this year after the initially successful debut campaign in the Premier League. He was given plaudits for the way he plays last season but this year, it’s a wholly different ball-game for the Aussie. He’s lost key players and such to the extent that he’s had to call upon schoolboys essentially to cover the team over this turbulent period.

“I think they should back him,” Given said

Chapman asked Given if he should be given more time to rectify things and the former Celtic goalkeeper offered his support to a fellow Celt. “I think they should back him,” he said. “They should support him. At least give him until the end of the season. Bring one or two players in before the window closes. Because as you said, they’ve got a 1-0 lead in the semi-final (EFL Cup) and doing well Europe. Who knows? They might win a trophy in his second season. Why not back him?”
