Liverpool have a slender lead to protect tonight as they welcome Paris Saint-Germain to Anfield for the second leg of their round-of-16 Champions League matchup.

In the first leg substitute Harvey Elliott scored the winner within a minute of entering the field to complete a smash and grab performance.

Cody Gakpo wasn’t risked against Southampton, but Arne Slot revealed that the Dutchman is ready to make an impact tonight after the 26-year-old was pictured in training.

Andy Robertson and Alexis Mac Allister were rested on the weekend and the pair are likely to be restored into the starting eleven.

PSG will be looking to make amends after they missed a plethora of chances in the French capital on Wednesday.

Luis Enrique put his faith into the youth on the weekend with 19-year-old Warren Zaire-Emery captaining the much-changed side to a 4-1 win over Rennes.

The entire squad has a clean bill of health which gives the Spanish tactician plenty of options ahead of the crunch tie.

Form

Liverpool: DWWWW

Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League this past weekend by coming from behind to beat a feeble Southampton side.

A rare lapse in judgement between the typically impregnable Alisson and Virgil van Dijk allowed Will Smallbone to put his team in front at the interval.

However, the hosts’ excellence shone through in the second period. Mohamed Salah netted twice form the penalty spot after Darwin Nunez had equalised.

Arsenal’s draw away to Manchester United on Sunday means the Reds have a 15-point gap at the top of the table.

Their supremacy extends to their European exploits. If Arne Slot’s team avoid defeat tonight, they will advance into the last eight of the Champions League.

If they do prevail over the Parisians, they will face the winner of Aston Villa vs Club Brugge in the quarter-finals.

Like Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain also took a huge step towards their domestic title at the weekend with a 4-1 victory over Rennes. Ousmane Dembele’s stoppage-time brace ensured Luis Enrique’s team secured the three points at Roazhon Park.

PSG’s closest competitors for the Ligue 1 crown are Marseille and they conceded a 94th minute winner from Lens’ Neil El Aynaoui on Saturday.

With nine games remaining, the French league leaders are mightily close to claiming their 13th title, and could become the first team in history to do so unbeaten.

They’ll be vying for revenge tonight having lost a game they utterly dominated last Wednesday. That defeat at the Parc des Princes last Wednesday was their first in 22 matches.

A virtuoso performance from Alisson heavily contributed to Liverpool recording a priceless victory in the first leg. PSG tormented the Reds all night long but a combination of heroic goalkeeping and wasteful finishing culminated in their demise on the night.

The typically electric Ousmane Dembele looked dangerous from the first whistle and he skipped past two defenders with ease before picking out Joao Neves. However, the midfielder struck the first clear-cut chance into the ground and it bounced onto the top of the netting.

January signing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia beautifully breached Alisson’s goal with a curling effort in the 20th minute. But the joy around the Parc des Princes was short lived as the semi-automated offside technology proved his heel was fractionally offside in the build-up.

Minutes later Bradley Barcola was adamant he should have had a penalty. Fellow Frenchman Ibrahima Konate forcefully dealt with the winger, although the referee deemed it a fair intervention.

Luis Enrique’s side continued to bombard the opposition but Alisson was equal to testing efforts from Dembele, Barcola and Kvaratskhelia on multiple occasions. The Georgian trickster was heavily involved after the interval and his rasping free-kick needed to be parried by the Liverpool stopper.

By the time Harvey Elliott replaced Mo Salah with four minutes remaining, PSG had recorded nine attempts on target. Meanwhile, Liverpool hadn’t even managed to test Gianluigi Donnarumma.

In a dramatic turn of events, Elliott landed a killer blow almost instantly. Darwin Nunez picked him out on the right-flank with a perfect pass and the 21-year-old placed the ball into the corner. Donnarumma’s fingertips couldn’t quite keep the shot out and the Reds returned to Merseyside with a valuable lead.
