Four key Manchester United defenders were missing from their opening training session ahead of next week’s Europa League Final.

Diogo Dalot, Leny Yoro, Ayden Heaven and Matthijs de Ligt were all absent from the United squad that took part in open training as they prepare to face fellow Premier League side Tottenham in Bilbao next week.

Yoro is the freshest of Ruben Amorim’s injury troubles, having been substituted in the 52nd minute during the weekend’s 2-0 defeat to West Ham with an issue Amorim described as “that problem at the beginning of the season,” and faces a race against time to be ready for the final.

De Ligt has been unavailable for the Red Devils since injuring his knee in the 4-3 defeat at Brentford, lasting only 35 minutes on his comeback from an ankle injury. Speaking about the Dutchman last week, Amorim said, “It is not a big issue. That is a good thing. He cannot play tomorrow and he’ll not play on Sunday but then we’ll check day by day.”

Dalot has been one of the longer absentees of the quartet, missing United’s previous five fixtures with a calf injury sustained in the 1-0 defeat against Wolves. It is unsure whether the Portuguese defender will feature again this campaign, with Amorim saying over a fortnight ago: “He has something in his muscle, his calf, he had a sequence of games, he played all the time, we try to manage but the players play a lot of minutes and not so ready to cope with that. Dalot felt something. We don’t know how long he’s going to be out. But he’s out for these next games.”

Heaven has been the most long-term absentee for the Red Devils recently, after being stretchered off during United’s win at Leicester City with a foot injury. The 18-year-old returned to the squad against Newcastle United on April 13, being named on the bench, but has not featured in any subsequent after suffering a “small setback.” His return is unknown.
