Lazio defender Alessio Romagnoli was selected among the Best XI of the Europa League Round of 16, as assembled by the WhoScored X account.
The 30-year-old emerged as the unlikely hero, scoring the equalizer in the second leg against Viktoria Plzen which secured the Biancocelesti a 3-2 win on aggregate. Astonishingly, the centre-back has now extended his goalscoring run to three matches in a row, having found the back of the net in the first leg in the Czech Republic last week, as well as the Serie A draw against Udinese.
Romagnoli has now become the second defender in Lazio history to score in both legs of a European double-encounter. He was only preceded by Roberto Cravero against Lokomotiv Plovdiv who achieved this feat in the first round of the UEFA Cup in 1993/94.
So when selecting the Best lineup from the Europa League Round of 16 (taking into account both legs), the former AC Milan captain was a natural pick. He joins a backline that contains Fenerbahce duo Mert Muldur and Milan Skrianiar, in addition to Athletic Bilbao’s Yuri Berchiche who scored in the second leg against Roma.
After hammering FCSB 7-1 on aggregate, Lyon was the most represented side with three players making the cut. Rayan Cherki, Ernest Nuamah took the wing slots while Georgian striker Georges Mikautadze got the nod upfront alongside Manchester United star Joshua Zirkzee.
Despite scoring a hattrick, Bruno Fernandes didn’t make the selections. Instead, it was Germany’s 2014 World Cup hero Mario Gotze who was named in midfield following a masterclass display for Eintracht Frankfurt, in addition to Rangers’ Vaclav Cerny who was sensational in the first leg against Fenerbahce.
