Jason Tindall is among the favourites to take over in West London

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe hopes that Jason Tindall remains at St. James' Park for the long haul amid links between his assistant and the Queens Park Rangers vacancy.

The West London outfit rounded off a tumultuous Championship season with victory against the Magpies' bitter rivals, Sunderland, at the Stadium of Light, courtesy of Nicolas Madsen's fifth-minute strike, with Kevin Betsy and Xavi Calm overseeing the encounter as Marti Cifuentes was placed on gardening leave last week.

Cifuentes was placed in such a position amid links to West Brom that have since been dismissed, and, unsurprisingly, speculation has already begun regarding a replacement for the Spaniard who emerged victorious in 28 of his 82 games in charge at Loftus Road, initially staving off relegation to League One before a season of mixed fortunes this time around.

However, addressing the media ahead of Newcastle's trip to Brighton and Hove Albion, Howe doesn't want to see Tindall, who was recently placed in interim charge whilst he recovered from pneumonia, leave the UEFA Champions League chasing side, despite being among the favourites for the job based on the bookmakers' odds.

The duo have been a key reason behind the Geordies' rapid upturn in fortunes, having initially replaced Steve Bruce in late 2021 just after Newcastle were taken over by the Saudi Public Investment Fund.

This has seen the Toon Army feature in the UEFA Champions League for the first time in nearly 20 years and win their first piece of domestic silverware since 1955 with a 2-1 victory over Liverpool in March's EFL Cup final.

Tindall does have some pedigree of being a head coach, having had a 45% win percentage in charge of Bournemouth following their relegation to the Championship in 2020/21, winning 14 of his 31 matches in charge before being sacked in February 2021.

However, his long-time colleague isn't aware of any strong links between the club from the capital and the 47-year-old.

“No, I know nothing of that," Howe said via the Northern Echo. “That's the first I've heard of it.

“I certainly hope not. JT's been brilliant for me, personally. And very highly valued, yeah, so I don't want him to go anywhere," he added.

Queens Park Rangers supporters will hope for quick solution to managerial saga

The past few seasons have been extremely chaotic in this part of West London, and yet another managerial pursuit will only add to such worries ahead of next season's Championship, which is bound to be even stronger as a result of the pedigree and ambition of sides relegated from the Premier League and promoted from League One.

FLW's Rangers fan pundit has backed the club to seal an agreement with Tindall, offering a comparison to Mick Beale's short time in charge, in which the former Rangers and Sunderland boss had the club at the top end of the second-tier before departing for Ibrox after just six months in charge.

Given his exploits with Howe at St James' and how much it would mean for the Newcastle boss to maintain his services, this would be a shrewd appointment for the club, although Tindall would no doubt want assurances regarding backing and stability, which are two buzzwords that haven't been positively associated with the Hoops in recent times.
