Inter Milan veteran Stefan de Vrij is adamant the Netherlands can still improve at EURO 2024 despite a rampant last-16 performance against Romania.

Speaking in the mixed zone, as quoted by FcInterNews the 32-year-old urged his comrades to be more clinical in the final third to avoid more late drama.

Despite a convincing scoreline, the game was in limbo heading into the final ten minutes.

Ronald Koeman’s side dominated the match, but other than Cody Gakpo’s early opener, they couldn’t find a way past Romania’s stubborn backline.

That’s until Donyell Malen netted twice beyond the 80-minute mark to seal the Tricolours’ fate and propel the Dutch into their first quarter-finals since 2008.

Inter star De Vrij has been Koeman’s first-choice partner for Virgil van Dijk since the get-go.

Playing alongside the Liverpool talisman has turned the former Lazio man into the best version of himself.

The two experienced centre-backs have forged a formidable defensive partnership, providing a backbone for the Netherlands’ superb run at the tournament.

However, there’s still room for improvement, especially in attack.

De Vrij thinks his attacking colleagues could’ve made his life easier had they been more clinical earlier in the game.

“We defended well from the front line, finding the right moment to apply pressure,” the Inter defender stated.

“That was something we struggled with the most last week.

“I think we could have made things easier if we had scored the second goal quickly.

“But we’ve shown that we’ve learned from last week. We can improve on this.”

De Vrij was an always-present figure for Inter last season. However, he has had to adapt to different circumstances at EURO 2024.

Unlike Simone Inzaghi, who prefers a three-man backline, Koeman plays with four at the back.

The Netherlands play Turkey in the quarterfinal of EURO 2024 on Saturday, July 6th, kick-off 21.00 CET.
