In a huge update, journalist Alex Pintanel reports that Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo will undergo surgery to address his thigh injury. As such, the senior centre-back will be out of action until December.

Araujo suffered the hamstring injury during Uruguay’s Copa America quarterfinal clash against Brazil and had to be taken off just 30 minutes or so into the match.

The 25-year-old was initially expected to be out for a period of two months, although a proper assessment of his injury was not yet carried out by the club until today.

Araujo went to the Barcelona training facilities today where he was examined by the club facilities.

After studying the results, Araujo and the club’s medical staff have opted to undergo surgery instead of following a conservative treatment for his recovery.

With the defender now set to be operated upon, it is expected that he will miss around four months of action, meaning he will be out until December later this year.

This comes as a huge blow for Barcelona who are already reeling with the absence of key midfielder Gavi, who is still recovering from his ACL injury.

Pedri, too, has suffered an injury and could miss the start of the season while Frenkie de Jong has also not fully recovered from his ankle issue.

The situation is far from ideal for new manager Hansi Flick who will now have to go into the season with a few of Barcelona’s most important players unavailable, including Araujo.

The defender could miss as many as 20 matches during the four-month period which would include an El Clasico against Real Madrid and the derbies against Espanyol and Girona as well as a large number of the Champions League group stage matches.
