On Monday morning, Bayern Munich forward Thomas Müller announced his retirement from international football after Germany’s exit from EURO 2024.

In his video (via @berger_pj), Müller said: “I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the team on the way to the 2026 World Cup – now as a fan and no longer as a player on the green pitch. Bye! See you soon…”

Müller decisions brings to an end a 14-year international career that saw him play 131 times for Germany scoring 45 times and most importantly lifting the World Cup 10 years ago.

The 34-year-old’s breakthrough internationally came in the 2010 World Cup where he scored five times for Germany as they finished third in South Africa. Müller would then match this feat once again when four years later he scored five times again as Germany went on to lift their fourth World Cup.

Müller also played in four EUROs but was never able to score in the tournament, despite his strong record at the World Cup. In 2012 and 2016, Germany reached the semi-finals each time but lost to both Italy and France.

However, Müller is not the only German player whose international future is up in the air, Ilkay Gündogan and Manuel Neuer are also considering their futures, with the latter leaning towards continuing on until the 2026 World Cup.
