Southampton legend seen in Portsmouth kit for reason fans can respect

The sight of Matt Le Tissier wearing a Portsmouth shirt is one for sore eyes, but the Southampton icon did so with good reason. Le God will forever be worshipped at St Mary's after finding the back of the net 195 times in 518 games, making him the club's all-time top scorer.

Le Tissier only played in two South Coast derby games, on the winning side once in a 3-0 FA Cup third round win in 1995/96. The personification of a one-club player, he even became the first-ever winner of the 'One-Club Man Award' for his 17-season spell at the club and was presented the award in Bilbao in 2015.

Yet, Le Tissier donned the Saints' arch-rivals' white away kit this week alongside several Portsmouth 'legends'. But fortunately it was all for a good cause.

Le Tissier wears Portsmouth kit in charity match

Le Tissier was a surprise guest at Alan Knight's charity match at Fratton Park on Monday (May 5). He didn't start the game but came on for Mark Kelly in the 24th minute with his side 2-0 ahead, per Portsmouth.co.uk

An estimated 6,500 fans were in attendance to watch the game which pitted Pompey legends against a Celebrity XI. Le Tissier's appearance inevitably drew stick from supporters but he took it in jest by waving and smiling.

Le Tissier, 56, was one of many familiar faces of English football to take part in the game. David Norris, Gareth Evans, Brett Pitman, Svetoslav Todorov, and Michael Doyle were also in action.

"Entered Enemy Territory" - Le Tissier on charity match appearance

Le Tissier was in good spirits regarding his appearance at Fratton Park and took to Instagram following the event. He wrote:

"Entered enemy territory today but for a top bloke in Alan Knight and great charities (prostate cancer) and the Barry Kilby Prostate Cancer Appeal. Great turnout with over 6000 spectators and not too much abuse."

The game between Alan Knight's Celebrity XI and Portsmouth legends finished 8-8. He'll undoubtedly be throwing the Pompey shirt away, especially next season when the South Coast derby occurs for the first time since 2012 following the Saints' relegation.
