Wrexham should look to tempt Sorba Thomas to The Racecourse this summer with the winger set to leave Huddersfield Town

Highlights

  • Huddersfield's Sorba Thomas may exit for only £850k - undervalued huge talent, possible move to Wrexham.
  • Wrexham should target Thomas for bargain fee - improve squad with Welsh international for only £850k.
  • Huddersfield undervaluing Thomas, should aim for a higher fee, might lose out on quality player opportunity.

Following Huddersfield Town's recent relegation to League One, it seems as if Sorba Thomas will be heading for the exit door at the John Smith's Stadium, but as it stands, he remains a Terrier.

Not many Huddersfield players would have emerged with any credit after a disappointing season which saw them relegated, but the likes of Jack Rudoni have already left the club, joining Coventry City for a reported fee of just under £4 million, and it's no surprise to see Thomas linked with a move away from Yorkshire.

The 25-year-old Welsh international has two years left on his deal at the John Smith's Stadium but the suggestion is that the Terriers are desperate to move him on amid interest from French Ligue 1 side Nantes.

However, despite being a key player for the Terriers and having two years left on his deal, the club are reportedly demanding a meagre £850,000 for his services this summer.

With this in mind, perhaps Wrexham should look to convince the Welsh international to cross the border and join the exciting project that has seen them win two consecutive promotions.

Wrexham should make an ambitious plot to sign Sorba Thomas

There's no doubt that Wrexham, led by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney would be able to afford Huddersfield's rumoured six-figure asking price, and the prospect of signing a current Welsh international would be one that appeals to the North Walian club.

It may seem like a sideways move for Thomas if he joins a fellow League One club when he's clearly good enough to be playing at a higher level, but the prospect of joining the exciting project at Wrexham could appeal to him, and a number of the Red Dragons' squad have previously dropped a level to play for them, such was the money on offer and attraction of playing for a club with Hollywood owners.

On paper, a move to Nantes is a good one for Thomas, and he'll be playing against some giants of the European game if he does move to the French west coast, but there's no guarantee he'll start week-in week-out, which he would at Wrexham.

Thomas hasn't made an appearance for Wales since March 2023, and a move to Wrexham could also arguably improve his international ambitions, as he'd be a key man for the Red Dragons, and would likely register impressive numbers, helping to put himself in Craig Bellamy's thinking.

Wrexham often utilised a 5-3-2 formation last season, with either Ryan Barnett or Anthony Forde starting at right wing-back.

Barnett impressed last season and was a regular starter for Phil Parkinson's side, but Thomas also has experience playing wing-back previously, and he'd be an upgrade to the players at the club currently.

Given their finances and the exciting project building, perhaps Wrexham should test the waters with a bid for Thomas. £850,000 would be an absolute steal for the Welshman and he could take their right side to the next level.

Huddersfield Town should be asking for more than £850,000

Considering the Terriers were over ambitious in their initial valuation of Rudoni, demanding £10 million at the beginning of the summer, it seems crazy that they're willing to offload Thomas for just £850,000.

Thomas is one of Huddersfield's main assets, and he had some of the best stats in the league in his position last season.

According to Fotmob, Thomas was in the top 5% of Championship wingers for assists (9), chances created (123), successful crosses (148) and successful dribbles (43).

With this in mind, it's no surprise he's attracting interest from clubs like Nantes, and it's quite puzzling why he hasn't attracted more interest from Championship clubs, especially with Huddersfield only wanting a six-figure fee.

Whoever signs Thomas this summer would have picked up a quality player for a bargain and Huddersfield will surely regret cashing in on him for such a small fee – though it seems it is their own desire to get rid of the player that has brought the fee down.

Wrexham would be silly not to look to take advantage of Thomas being available for a six-figure fee and they should be making a concerted effort to bring the Welshman back across the border this summer.
