Atalanta slipped to a dismal 2-0 home loss to runaway Serie A leaders Inter on Sunday night, perhaps waving goodbye to their Scudetto hopes. Gian Piero Gasperini’s charges extended their dreadful losing run against the Nerazzurri to eight consecutive matches.
Fresh off a stunning 4-0 win against Juventus in Turin, Atalanta headed into proceedings seeking revenge for an identical loss in September’s reverse fixture at the San Siro. With three points separating the sides before the kick-off, La Dea had a golden opportunity to consolidate their title hopes.
However, the game didn’t start well for Atalanta as Inter nearly took an early lead through Marcus Thuram. The post saved Gasperini’s side on that occasion. The hosts then tried to reply through Mario Pasalic. Yet, Yann Sommer pulled off a massive save to deny his free header midway through the first half.
Carlos Augusto opened the floodgates at the start of the second half. Atalanta poorly defended the corner, leaving the Brazilian wingback unmarked around the six-yard box, and there was no salvation this time. Ederson shot his team in the foot toward the final whistle, picking up a red card after losing his temper.
Inter quickly seized a numerical advantage, with Lautaro Martinez beating Marco Carnesecchi from point-blank to confirm Atalanta’s third home league loss this season. As a result, La Dea will enter the international break six points adrift of the table-topping Nerazzurri.
Marco Carnesecchi – 6
There was nothing he could’ve done for the first goal. But he made a phenomenal save to thwart Davide Frattesi late in the game to prevent another fiasco.
Sead Kolasinac – 6
It felt like Augusto slipped his mark to break the deadlock. Otherwise, the Bosnian veteran did well, never running away from a physical battle with Thuram.
Isak Hien – 6.5
The Swedish star had Lautaro’s number for most of the game before Atalanta’s late collapse clipped his wings.
Berat Djimsiti – 6
Often outpaced by Augusto, the Albanian defender had an underwhelming night, though he seemed calm and collected in possession.
Raoul Bellanova – 5.5
Despite venturing forward on any given opportunity, the Italian wingback’s crosses were often awful and well off the mark.
Marten de Roon – 6
While the Atalanta captain held up his end of the bargain in defense, he did next to nothing in the opposition’s third, frequently struggling to make the right decision.
Ederson – 3
Frustration over a subpar performance boiled over at the final stretch as he blacked out for 60 seconds, enough for Davide Massa to give him marching orders.
Davide Zappacosta – 5.5
He tried to be the point of difference on the left flank but to no avail. Denzel Dumfries’ strength and pace proved too much for the aging wingback.
Mario Pasalic – 6.5
His header was the closest Atalanta got to finding the net tonight.
Ademola Lookman – 6
Full of trying, the Nigerian winger found little space to test Yann Sommer. Benjamin Pavard guarded him well.
Mateo Retegui – 4
A forgettable night for Serie A’s leading goalscorer saw Inter keep the Italy international cut off from the rest of the pack all game.
Matteo Ruggeri – 6
Charles De Ketelaere – 5.5
Daniel Maldini – 6
